Well, well! I said last night to Danielle that I was really hoping for Rene's second career hat trick as we were reminiscing about our home game one year earlier when Rene captured his first against the Ottawa Senators. Although that didn't happen, I was pleasantly surprised with tonight's victory against the Edmonton Oilers, 3 out of our four goals from the tip of Rene's stick. That hat trick I was praying for only came on day late of his one year anniversary and I'll take it! I bet he will, too.
I was just sitting here with the twins explaining what it means when you score a hat trick, how many minutes you stay in the penalty box for and that it's ok for a goaltender to head to the bench during a play because that means we get an extra attacker. Then, it's shower time. As soon as they leave the room, Rene scores a hat trick and the poor boys missed it! Oh the irony! I'm sincerely pleased with Bourque's performance since he has become a Calgary Flame. People continue to be shocked by him "from the beginning of the season", but I beg to differ. He was an amazing influence from the first time his skates hit the ice in his Reds. No one was paying attention, I suppose.
There is so much hockey on right now that I almost don't know what to do with myself. I've got the twins excited for the Team Canada announcements tomorrow morning and my alarm is already set for 9am. There's been quite a bit of heated discussion about starting goaltenders between friends right now. Of course, having Luongo as one of those options and having lived in Vancouver for the last two and a half years I think a large amount of my friends have leaned in that direction out of loyalty as Canucks fans. I personally would love to see Martin Brodeur as our starter because I feel that he deserves it more than anyone in his category. His last season was impeccable with the NJ Devils, not that Luongo is any less talented, I would feel more confident about our team with Brodeur in charge of net-minding. I would like to see Luongo as his backup however, but only time will tell.
As for forwards there is no doubt in my mind that Jarome Iginla will be picked for Team Canada. He's clearly been a favorite in the NHL world since he hit the ice eleven seasons ago, the only question there is if he has a chance at being named the Captain for 2010. I'd say that he'd be pleased to simply play for Team Canada and strive for another Gold Medal!
It's going to be a very interesting couple of days, announcements, tonight's game and World Juniors and the Calgary Flames for NYE 2010! I've got my lucky socks on!
Let's go boys!

"These Were a Few of My Favorite Things"
Perhaps I shouldn't count my chickens before they've hatched?
SO, let's recap on my list of Top Five things that I would love to always remember about last night's game.
#1 - "Ya! PLAY BY THE RULES, YOU JERK!" One of the funniest things I have ever heard yelled from the stands as a Canucks player got sent to the penalty box! I will never forget this, ever.
#2 - The Swedish Chef's five rows behind us on the next isle, "Bourque, Bourque, Bourque, Bourque!" (The same guys from #1)
#3 - The guys we made fun of because of their Flames Pajama pants from last year's Dec. 27th game that were behind us in line this year for beers. Same guys. Hilarious.
#4 - The drunkards sitting beside us that got caught taking pictures of Danielle with their phones and then the guy's comeback being "I have a wife and a kid and if my woman was here right now she'd beat your ***!" Way to go, buddy. You're a real man. If your woman was there maybe you wouldn't have been taking snap shots of other women at a hockey game.
#5 - The little guy behind me (Canucks fan) helping point out where Conroy was so I could take pictures!
All in all, our 2nd annual Dec 27th Flames game was far from a success, but us fans handled it well and there was little to no commotion between rivals. They cheered, we cheered...it was kind of nice. The Flames still hold two games in hand until tonight's game against our Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Oilers. The Flames struggled last night to keep their men out of the penalty box, although most of the calls were ridiculous and they seemed to favor Vancouver all night. Both of the charges against our goaltender, missed! A few dives and we're in the box again. Let's keep Bouwmeester on defense tonight, I'd say. And Glencross? Good to have you back on the ice buddy, no more suspensions, ok? Craig? I'm rooting for you! How about a goal for New Years! And somebody PLEASE, find me a Craig Conroy T-shirt?! I've been looking everywhere and no one has any left. OR a small Jersey? Anything!
And we're off! Flames @ Oilers! Let's make it 19-12!! Break this streak, boys!

"Sending Your Boys Back A-Whale'n!"
Today is Danielle and I's 2nd annual Post-Christmas game together. Last year we were both terribly sick and went anyway with terrible flu-like faces captured forevermore in the digital world. This year...my friend was MIA for two days and I thought we weren't going to make it...but I got the phone call this morning from a very sick Flames Fan who was very adamant about not missing this game. What a trooper! That's a REAL fan!
Let's get caught up on some stats, shall we? As it stands right now we have four games in hand and are five points behind top spot in our division with Colorado in first place. We have two games in hand against each other rival, one point ahead of the Canucks, four points ahead of the Wild and a giant lead against the Oilers with an eleven point gap. What that tells me is that we are in good standing all with a nice rest over the holidays. Full bellies and hearts alike, I gather that the fight in us is as strong as ever. While the month of December hasn't looked quite as promising as the previous month of November, I have a wonderful feeling about this last week of 2009.
Tonight's game hosting the Canucks means a lot more to me than any other regular game, not that I look at ANY game in that light, but hear me out. Coming from GM place, which sort of reminds me of switching schools in elementary, no friends, you're not wearing the "right clothes"... you just don't fit in! Well, who wants to when the shoe just doesn't fit? Not this girl! However, I must admit, you get used to defending yourself after a while and it is something I find that I miss. BUT, as quickly as the feeling came, it passed...I'm over it.
I have never been at the Saddledome for a Canucks game, so this is a real treat. I also brag about our 'Dome announcer all the time, it's been exactly one year since I've heard him roll his R's and drag out a players first name in anticipation! He's the best! I miss hearing the sweet sound of the buzzer when a goal is scored instead of watching desperately for the tiny light above Luongo to go off. I won't miss "LUUUUUUU" although I still laugh every time I hear it reminding me of Chelsea screaming at the top of her lungs! Classic. I can't wait for the flames above our 'tron to ignite and to watch McGrattan kick some poor guy's butt on Center ice. One year ago today Rene (pronounced RENEE!) Bourque scored a hat trick and we walked out of the 'Dome with six goals...
I watched the Canucks play last night hoping the Oilers would take the win and some of their pride before they traveled the three hours to Calgary for tonight's match up. Although it is to our advantage that they're playing back to back games, you always hope the team playing your opponent beforehand drains them of as much energy as possible. Regardless, I am bias and always believe in my colors. And so I must go and prepare for my eventful evening. I have NEW socks (but we all knew I would...gotta love those brothers of mine), a new scarf (Thanks, Mom!), and my mittens from last year (Thanks, Danielle!). OH and I even have my new Flames miniature replica gloves for my rear view mirror! So, I bid you good-night and happy gaming!
Which Jersey should I wear......

"MAMA'S HOME, BOYS!!"
After a two and a half year hiatus, MAMA IS HOME!! That's right, and with the news I must also offer my apologies for neglecting to get back into the swing of things with my entries. I've been struggling with the idea of changing my blog name, because let's face it, it's awesome. So now, I'm wearing straight red, no whites and my first game on home ice is going to be... you'll never guess... the VANCOUVER CANUCKS!!! How Appropriate, just sayin'.
Come December 27th I will be more ecstatic than ever to see those ridiculous whale jerseys flopping around the ice, back in the 'Dome where ALL of the fans wear their colors. In an arena where we cheer FOR our team, not AGAINST the opposing. Where our team mascot gears up the crowd with "Go Flames Go" signs and keeps us positive!
And so the good news is that I can finally enjoy being at a hockey game without the harassment from grown men who can afford $200 tickets and that seems to be the only reason they go, for status. I paid $45 for MY ticket. Suckers. I'd pay $45 to watch the Flames pulverize the Canucks any day. The GREAT news is that I'm home for every Red Mile event and you know I'll be there for every one of them. No road trips home for the playoffs this year!
To all of the Jarome haters out there... he IS the Calgary Flames, so back off. For anyone who has anything negative to say about his performance you need to remind yourself of a few things. We are a scoring team and that is what you should have on the top of your priority list as a Calgary fan. He has transformed a team that left the season last year with very little chemistry into a group of men who all seem to be performing quite well as a unit. If you need anymore than that then I suggest you turn on your TV to today's game. Iginla has points in all three goals, two of them from the tip of his own stick. Living in Vancouver and watching their fans give up on their own team every second day has stretched my patience for band wagon jumpers. You're in or you're out. Leave Jarome alone.
All in all, it's been a great return back to my city. I still wear my socks (although some of them have been stitched back together, so I've asked the boys for new ones in my stocking!) and I still sport my mitties! I guess for now I can survive without my Away Jersey, but a road trip is in the works.... somewhere, some day... I'll be an "Away Jersey" again. But for right now...
